Join a series of three interactive discussions based on chapters from Intelligent Leadership by Alistair Mant
Alistair Mant (1938 – 2020) was a notable Australian management consultant and writer. We will read and discuss his book Intelligent Leadership which is available here and as an e-book here. He writes lucidly and engagingly about leader–follower relations and systems theory of organisations, emphasising that these issues cannot be separated from the primary task. His brief autobiography gives a good sense of his writing style.
His writing is informed by a wide range of practical experiences , from his first job on the Snowy Mountains Project to IBM, and he furthered his theoretical development over his years at the British Institute of Management and as a senior researcher at the Tavistock. Here is a witty and pointed example of his writing on management.
Intelligent Leadership is composed of chapters that expound Mant’s ideas of leadership, and several case studies of successful leaders.
Managers and educators will find particular value in Mant’s ideas about engaging people in thinking about complex tasks.
Ross Williams will lead a series of three seminar/case discussions. Based on chapters in the book, the sessions will be separated by a few weeks to aid preparation and digestion. Members who wish it will have the opportunity to present a summary of one of the cases and lead discussion.
