Special guest Professor Emeritus and PhD Co-Lead NIODA Susan Long discussing her book:
Evolution of the Unconscious – persons, groups, nature and spirit
Publisher: Routledge
Susan will talk about the social unconscious based on the chapter of that name in the book
Abstract:
The idea of a social unconscious with a social ‘mind’ appears at first as counter-intuitive, mainly because our way of thinking puts individual persons as central and individual minds as a given. But the perspective of the individual mind as the centre of thinking has to change just as the Copernican revolution changed thinking about the universe. While Freud showed how unconscious thoughts could overthrow the conscious so-called rational ego, so Bion, Foulkes and those that follow argue for the centrality of an unconscious field of associative and connective thinking. This social and associative unconscious becomes embedded in the very fabric of our institutions (family, the law, education, industry) and is thus passed from generation to generation. Our freedom as a species is integrally linked to our understanding and experience of this unconscious.
