We invite interested GRA Members and Associates to an open meeting on 24 May to initiate the 'Engaging with Racism in Ourselves and Society' project. To brainstorm ideas for activities and events, and to form a Working Group for progressing next steps and coordinating project activities.
This viewing group will meet on five occasions with the same membership to watch together two purposively selected cinematic films, to explore the theme of sociogenic defences as manifested within and by the characters and the societal and organisational systems that produce them, as well as within us as the viewing audience.
Many of us in GRA knew Herb or even had the privilege to work, think and learn with him over his many years here in Australia and overseas. He was an important figure in the world of socioanalysis, systems psychodynamics, group relations and social dreaming. A thoughtful, intelligent and considerate man, Herb trained in both child and adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Tavistock Clinic and Institute of Psychoanalyis in London
Timed to coincide with the GRA Socioanalysis Special Issue on Seeking Asylum, the Tavistock held a talk by David Lawlor & Mannie Sher on their journal paper: "The use of detention as a defence against intolerable social ambivalence towards asylum-seekers".
Tavistock has made a podcast of that talk available to all GRA members.
